My parents flew in last Thursday for a Windy City visit. Unfortunately, they started the trip with a four hour delay on the tarmac on the plane because of storms in our area. What looked like a 7:15pm arrival ended up being a 1:20am arrival at our doorstep.

But the weekend went up up from there! We did a lot of relaxing, saw some really cool architecture in Oak Park at Frank Lloyd Wright's home and studio, walked among some dead peps at the graveyard next to our condo (really cool monuments and headstones though!), and ate some yums to the tums food!

My dad is mildly obsessed with Graceland Cemetary. It is old, way way old, with headstones dating back to the early 1800's. There are a ton of famous Chicagoians buried there - and he knew them all from a Worlds Fair book I gave him for Christmas last year. It was surprisingly very beautiful in within the old brick walls surrounding all the acres and acres of history, with only the sound of the el train and the roar of Wrigley bringing you back to the present. Funny how it is next door to our condo and we've never gone before.

One morning we went to a restaurant named Table Fifty-Two. It is Oprah's old personal chef's (Art Smith) restaurant. Normally he's there for pictures and to greet his patrons, but this weekend he was out of town for business. We were told he just filmed an episode of Iron Chef that will be aired on October on the Food Network. It was yummy - and such a cute little gem close to downtown.

Speaking of food - I put my cooking skills to use this weekend. We did a lot of dinners at home, but one meal I have to urge everyone to try is a Carmelized Onion and Gorgonzola pizza. I frequently make my mom's homemake dough recipe (very easy and ridiculously good) so I used that, and cooked up 3 sliced onions in olive oil, aged balsamic vinegar and rosemary for 30 minutes - holy yum! Topped the dough with the onions, gorgonzola, plus goat cheese and some leftover filet migon steak from the night before.... so easy and so delicious!

Another afternoon we ventured out to the closest 'burb to the city - Oak Park. We went there to take the Frank Lloyd Wright tour of his house and studio. This neighborhood is amazing - beautiful old home, vast yards, with great design. He was way ahead of his time for the early 1900's. His home was one of the coolest places I'd ever been in. I wish they would allow still photography inside...
